Calm In the Chaos Is Not Too Good to Be True!

Think this all sounds too good to be true?

Good news! It is good, but not too good to be true!

In my recent podcast interview with Megan Whiteside for Episode 44 of her Mom Life and Law Podcast, we discussed actionable strategies to create the life we want, to create the way we want to feel, and to calm the chaos so we can work with it, not against it.

Even in your busy life, you have the power to create calm in your chaos. If you believe that your circumstances must change for you to feel how you want to feel, then you’ll always feel like a victim.

You have the power to change your thoughts, which can then change your feelings, all without anything changing in your circumstances.

As Megan herself said, "My lawyer brain didn’t believe it until I️ started doing this kind of thought work. It’s amazing the happiness and peace you can cultivate in your life, without any of your circumstances changing.”

In the podcast, I share some of my favorite simple tools for creating the feelings we want to feel so that we are not dependent upon external circumstances over which we have no control. All we can control is ourselves, so it is necessary to start internally.

To explore this power of the mind, we discuss my life journey thus far and how it has helped me reach a kind of calm that helps me enjoy my life without feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. I talk about how I built the life I truly want and how I think it is possible for everyone to do the same.

Megan and I discuss the details of how I started my career journey by putting in long hours at BigLaw, but as I wanted more in my life, I decided to go part-time at BigLaw. While this worked well for my mental health and life goals, the partners at that BigLaw firm questioned my loyalty and dedication to my job, letting me know that I would not advance there if I wanted to be anything more than a lawyer working 50+ hours a week. That was not the life I wanted, so I left and made my own way, starting my own solo practice and ultimately joining my current small firm, where I work part-time as a partner.

This journey has outward steps and processes, of course, but it was mostly an internal journey involving lots of reflective work identifying my core values and managing my mind. This internal work is what has helped me manage my time and my life in a way that works for me.

Most importantly, I think, we talk about my internal journey of identifying my core values and managing my mind, which I believe is what we must first do in order to manage our time. After all, great time management without clarity of values and mind management leads only to a life where everything on the to-do list is completed, but doesn’t provide any enjoyment or true satisfaction.
